James Spence, 79, of the 400 block of Roosevelt Blvd., passed away peacefully May 11, 2002, at Maryview Medical Center.
Born in Longridge, Va., Mr. Spence was the son of the late John and Ella Spence. He was a retired mechanic for ESTECH Corporation after 40 years of service. He was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, and a faithful member of United Voices Choir. He loved the Lord, his pastor, his church and the minister of music.
The widower of Elizabeth Doretha Ashe Spence, he is survived by a devoted daughter, Velma Scott Pitts of Portsmouth; two sisters, Bessie Lee Warren of Virginia Beach and Odessa Anthony of Chesapeake; a brother, John Spence of Detroit, Mich.; a granddaughter, Zina Elizabeth Williams Parker of Portsmouth; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Williams and Yvonna Parker, both of Portsmouth; an adopted son, Dennis Lawrence; a special niece, Brenda Livermon; and a special friend, Marion Stephenson.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Dr. Curtis E. Edmonds Sr. with burial in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Thursday.
