Delaware. Was released by order of President Lincoln.
Knew Abraham Lincoln since childhood. The Winkler's were neighbors of the Lincoln's in Spencer/Warrick County IN.
Lincoln served as his lawyer in 1842 in Coles County.
In a letter to President Lincoln in Apr 1864 Dennis Hanks wrote to Lincoln and mentioned the Charleston Riot and stated in the letter "young ewing winkler was wounded"
There is little doubt that Winkler and Lincoln were well acquainted.

Unable to find a tombstone but believed to be buried next to 2nd wife Sarah, based on document showing ownership of plots and index card found in the Coles County Genealogical Society cemetery records in the 1980's that state he was buried at Union Cemetery.
