Religious Leader. Fr. McGivney founded of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Haven, Connecticut. He was first buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Waterbury, Connecticut, but, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus in 1982, with canonical and civil approval, the remarkably well-preserved remains of Father McGivney were brought back from Waterbury to St. Mary's Church, New Haven, where he founded the group. He was ordained a priest in Baltimore's historic Cathedral of the Assumption by Archbishop James Gibbons on December 22, 1877. His two younger brothers, became priests also, and, from 1901 to 1939, his younger brothers, Msgrs. Patrick and John J. McGivney, served the Knights as Supreme Chaplains. In October 2020, he was beatified after a miracle approved by Pope Francis in May of 2020.
