Obituary - Evan A. Whitesides, 84, passed away March 25, 2008 from causes incident to Parkinson's disease.Evan was born July 25, 1923 in Layton, Davis County, Utah to J. Morris and Luie H. Adams Whitesides. He was the fifth child in a family of seven and a lifelong resident of Layton. He was raised on the family farm and assisted in its operation for most of his lifetime with his father and brother, Dee. The farm is now part of I-15 and the Layton Hills Mall.
He attended Layton Elementary School and graduated from Davis High School in 1941. He participated in all school activities and served as student body president.
Evan worked at Hill Air Force Base for 33 years where he started as a mechanic learner in 1941 and concluded his career as acting Deputy Director of Maintenance in 1974 at the age of 51. He attended numerous management training courses throughout his career, which assisted him in his professional, civic and church service responsibilities.
He served 2 1/2 years in the Army Signal Corps during World War II at Camp Crowder, MO and Fort Monmouth, NJ.
Evan married Erma Patrick of Springville, Utah, on January 17, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of six children, 27 grandchildren, and 35 great-grand-children.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many responsible positions during his life. He served as Bishop of the Layton Seventh Ward, as Stake President of the Layton Utah Stake, and as a sealer in the Ogden Temple.
Evan was active in community service and served on the Layton City Board of Adjustments, the Davis County Library Board, and was appointed to the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District in 1982 and elected Chairman of the Board in 1983.
Some of Evan's distinguishing traits were his desire to establish a reputation of good performance and to serve as a mediator. He instilled confidence and perseverance in his children and others with whom he worked. He had a terrific sense of humor expressed often in a dry wit. He was a consummate patriot, loved the flag and his country. He loved the soil, a fine piece of machinery, and good wood.
Evan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Erma; and five children: Linda (Ned) Iverson, Layton; Ralph (LeAnn), Logan; Grant (Terri), Layton; LuAnn (Ron) Elmer, Sandy; and Ray
(Alexandra), Moscow, Russia; also his sisters Ellen (Hal) Briggs, Layton; Gail (Ute) Knowlton, Kaysville. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Ross E., a brother George Dee, sisters Alean, Bernice and Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held Sat., March 29, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Layton Kays Creek Ward, Evergreen Chapel, 2435 E. 1550 N. Friends and family may call Fri. from 5-8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road and Sat. from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
