This child's name appears both on a tall rectangular memorial with Albert K. Nawahi (1881-1904), J. Nawahi (1842-1896), and Kalei Nawahi (1877-1901) and on a smaller upright marker with Mrs. Kahaoleaua (1835-1882).
A rough translation of the child's Hawaiian-language obituary from Ka Nupepa Kuokoa, 17 March 1888, p 2: "A FLOWER BUD IS GONE. Oh Freedom! Aloha. It pleased the Great Father to send to our heavenly home our three sons, and the youngest in that family, Joseph Nawahi Jr. He was born at Home Lani Hilo, Hawaii, on June 24 1885 at 3 am, and died on March 3 1888, at 6:40 pm, so a mere 2 years, 8 months, 9 days, and 15 hours and 40 minutes of his life in this world. He last seemed fine for a couple of weeks or more. And before he died, his last words that he answered to us were this. I will return to the Heavenly Home. And indeed, just a few hours after he uttered those words, Oja returned to that heavenly home above where eternal life is. His body was buried in the heavenly home (Homelani) cemetery, just adjacent to our fence. He has a position that we respect very much in every way, which he achieved at a very young age. After that, there was a lot of love and memories for him, which fell on us and the whole family. But. according to the words of the Great Book: He brought it, and he took it away. It is your will to do it. Joseph Nawahi.
