College Basketball Coach. For nine seasons (1981 to 1990), he served as head coach of the St. Joseph's University Hawks. Born in Philadelphia, he was a standout player and member of the West Catholic High School team which won the city title in 1959. He continued his athletics at St. Joseph's where he concluded his collegiate career as one of the school's top players. Boyle began his coaching career as an assistant at Widener University and served at that same capacity under Jack McKinney, Harry Booth and Jim Lynam at St. Joseph's, before becoming the school's head coach in 1981. During his tenure, he guided the Hawks to a 25 win 5 loss record and the Conference Tournament Championship in 1981-1982, and a 26 win 6 loss record in 1985-1986, as they clinched both the Atlantic 10 Conference Regular Season Championship and Conference Tournament Championship. Boyle was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic and "Big 5" for the 1985-1986 season. After compiling a 151 win 114 loss record, he left St. Joseph's in 1990 to join the professional ranks as an assistant coach under Paul Westhead with the Denver Nuggets. He died from lung cancer.
