WAR OF 1812: 01 JUL 1814: NEW LONDON CT; VOLUNTEERED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR DRAFTEE ALFRED ROBERTS; at the age of 17. He volunteered "for the duration of the war".

He served in Captain N. Johnson's Company of light artillery in the Connecticut Militia. He was in New London CT for about a month then transfered, with about 1/3 of the Company with whom he mustered, to Fort Saybrook. He remained at the Fort until 30 NOV 1814 at which time he was discharged. The record shows some of the persons serving in the same Company; Sargent Hazzard HULL, Private Lewis PECK, Private Israel SKINNER and John RINGHAM, Drummer Boy. 30 NOV 1814: DISCHARGED; SAYBROOK CT.

"Went to sea as a young man" according to THE VINTON MEMORIAL.
Amos was sailing 'before the mast' on the ship China with Master Hiram Putnam when his friend THOMAS JEWETT died of small pox in 1822. Thomas was 21 years of age and he and Ann G. Smith had filed their intention to marry in Salem MA on 5 OCT 1822. Also a friend of Ann's, Amos was charged with officially giving Ann the sad news. Within 2 years Ann and Amos had married.
