Arthur H. "Uncle Bill" Abernathy, 81, of Taylorsville passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Cartersville Medical Center. Born October 27, 1929 in Bartow County, he was the son of the late Bart Abernathy and the late Lesie Hubbard Abernathy. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald Abernathy; and his sisters, Eunice Johnson, and Mary Kate Dover.
Uncle Bill lived in Bartow County his entire life and was a member of Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church in Taylorsville. In his younger years he was a farmer and at the time of his retirement in 1993 he was employed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Uncle Bill spent a great deal of his life taking care of and helping family members and it was the greatest enjoyment in his life. He and his brother, Jess, were always very close and spent lots of time together. He loved to garden and looked forward to growing tomatoes to share with family and friends. He was always very proud of his produce, and many times would say, "I miss riding my tractor so much." Uncle Bill was 81 years old and had trouble walking, but was able to remain at home with the loving help of his doctors, nurses and caregivers. During the last few weeks of his life, spent in the hospital, he had many loving caregivers. He was so happy to be a part of his church and when it became too difficult to walk and he wasn't able to attend services he missed it so much. He would always say, "I will be glad when I can walk a little better so that I can go back to church." When unable to attend church he loved to listen to gospel music and watch church services on TV.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Martha Abernathy; his very special niece, Penny Abernathy who Uncle Bill raised after the passing of her mother and grand parents, he and Penny spent fifty-three years caring for one another; his nephews, Jamie Abernathy, and Don Johnson and his wife Debbie; his other nieces and their spouses, Shirley and AI Kennedy, Pam and John Jennings, Bessie and Gerry Campbell, and Donna and Chuck Roland; his great nieces and nephews, Tia Abernathy, Taylor Abernathy, Alison Odom, Alvin Kennedy, Brandi Wade, Jessica Campbell, Brittany Johnson, and Cole Johnson. Many great-great nieces and nephews survive. Even though Uncle Bill had no children of his own he loved his family dearly and always did for their children. In the last few years of his life he spent many visits with his great-great nephew, "Little Jack Odom" whom he was so proud of and loved dearly. He is also survived by many other relatives and great friends. Three of his special running buddies were Douglas Bennett, Clayton Moore, and Bud Fields they were always there for him if he needed help or just needed someone to talk to.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Bethel Crossroads Baptist Church in Taylorsville with Rev. Charles Garrett and Rev. Charles Moore officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:00 – 2:00. Burial will follow in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Kingston.
Serving as pallbearers will be Doug Bennett, Bud Fields, Don Johnson, Jamie Abernathy, Chuck Roland, and Johnny Jennings. These gentlemen are asked to be at the church by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
