John Bruce Aga Sr., 83, died March 6, 2011 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
John was born June 3, 1927, the son of Clarence and Edna (Lovelett) Aga in Minneapolis. The family moved to Alexandria, where Bruce graduated from Central High School in 1945. Bruce served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946, where he was stationed in Guam. Upon his honorable discharge, Bruce attended St. Cloud State College in St. Cloud.
In 1948 he met Ardis Eloise Nomeland. They married June 10, 1950 in Osakis. They were married for 49 years. The couple was blessed with two sons, John Bruce Aga Jr. and Paul Andrew Aga.
Early in their marriage, Bruce worked in many different sales positions that included selling seed to farmers and stocks and bonds to investors. In 1967, Bruce began working as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force, Space Command, located in El Segundo, California. He advanced to become a senior manager of a manpower engineering team within Space Command. He participated in many Air Force space programs to include the development and launch of our GPS satellite system. In his last assignment, Bruce became the first civilian to hold the position of chief of staff at the Space Command in El Segundo. He retired from federal service in 1987.
In 1984 Bruce and Ardis had the opportunity to travel extensively in Europe. One of their stops was to the Volvo factory, where they purchased a Volvo automobile, which they drove around Europe. Bruce kept that Volvo for the rest of his life. In 1987, Bruce and Ardis relocated to Cocoa, Florida where they resided for many years until they returned to Alexandria. They purchased a home on Lake Cowdry. They lived there until Ardis' death on February 13, 2000.
One of Bruce's greatest gifts was his singing ability. During his time in northern California, he was very involved in local musical theater. He participated in productions that included Pearl Bailey and Leslie Uggams. After moving to southern California, he sang at many U.S. Air Force functions during his federal career. He also got the chance to sing the National Anthem at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game. He had the opportunity to sing as a soloist and as a member of the choir in productions of Handel's "Messiah." He recorded an album, "Bruce Aga in Concert, An Evening of Sacred Music." Proceeds from the sales of the album went toward scholarships.
Bruce married Audrey Palmquist in Alexandria on February 18, 2001. They resided at their home on Lake Cowdry. They were both very involved in music through church and various local events in the Alexandria area. Bruce also stayed very involved by serving his community through Kiwanis and his volunteer work at Bethany Home.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Audrey Palmquist Aga; son, John Bruce Aga Jr. (Patricia) of Cottage Grove; stepsons, Michael (Debra) Palmquist of Minneapolis and Tim (Phoebe) Palmquist of Minneapolis; stepdaughters, Mary (Terry) Flood of Portland, OR and Tira Palmquist (Phil Thompson) of Irvine, CA; grandsons, David and Christopher Aga; great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jacob Aga; stepgrandchildren, Erika (Troy Smith) Palmquist, Lia Palmquist, Julian Palmquist, Gabe Palmquist, Dan (Julie) Flood, Maja Palmquist and Simone Davis; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Siri Smith and Audrey Flood.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ercel, Donald "Bud" and Roger; wife, Ardis; and son, Paul Aga.
A memorial service was held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 12 with the Rev. David Gran officiating. Greg Kapphahn served as organist. Military honors were provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936 and the Minnesota National Guard Honors.
