Nathaniel Austin was the son of Nathaniel Austin Jr. and Sarah Ann Anderson. He was born in the Old Ninety Six District of South Carolina October 8, 1773. He married Nancy "Polly" Gilbert circa 1793 in South Carolina. He resided in Laurens Co., South Carolina until the 1820 census after which he relocated to Georgia. In the cenus of 1830 through 1860 he resided in Gwinnett Co., Georgia He drew land in the Georgia land lottery of 1827 in Gwinnett County and also drew land in the 4th district, Lot 548 Walker Co. in the Rocky Creek Section in the Cherokee Lottery in 1832. His son, Colonel James Austin was a Gwinnett County Judge and appears in court records as early as 1821. In the March 1828 term of the Gwinnett County Court he was appointed a road commissioner. "Ordered that Robert Craig, John Stewart, Simeon Sticklin and Nathaniel Austin be appointed commissioners to lay off and run out a road agreeably to the petition within, leaving the Decatur road at the lower end of James Austin's plantation and to intersect the Whatley ford near Pew's Creek."
Nathaniel died when he was 88 years of age in about 1860 or 1861 and was interred in the Old Larenceville City Cemetery in Gwinett County, Georgia. It is believed that there is no marker for his grave.
