The most able and successful son of Isham and Juliet Chilton Keith of Fauquier County married Frances Morson. She was the daughter of Arthur Alexander Morson and Maria Scott Morson. The red haired, blue-eyed James Keith enlisted with the Black Horse Troop on 25 April 1861. The reports distinguish him in battle. He was appointed adjutant on 7 December 1863. After being captured at Appomattox, he was paroled at Winchester on 30 May 1865. After taking his degree in law from the University of Virginia, he engaged in the practice. Elected to the Virginia Legislature in 1869, he was soon elected Circuit Judge. Elevated to a seat on the bench of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, he soon was made president.
