Jazz Drummer. He was best known for his work as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Afflicted with impaired vision from birth, this would lead him to limiting his activities to the indoors. At age six Morello began learning to play the violin, but after an encounter with Jascha Heifetz he realized his skills would never reach the level he hoped for and instead switched to studying the drums. He was mentored by George Lawrence Stone and later studied under Billy Gladstone of Radio City Music Hall note. Morello would move to New York City and gain experience playing in such bandleaders groups as Stan Kenton and Jay McShann, before joining Dave Brubeck in 1955. He will be best remembered for his featured drum solo on Brubeck's trend-setting 1961 hit "Take Five." After departing in 1968, he became a renowned teacher and mentored future drummers Max Weinberg and Danny Gottlieb. From 1963 he made his home in Irvington, New Jersey.
