John Randolph Hearst Dies Unexpectedly on Vacation

St. Thomas, Virgin Is, Nov. 13 - John Randolph Hearst, son of the late publisher William Randolph Hearst, died unexpectedly today. He was 49. Authorities said Hearst, assistant General manager of Hearst Newspapers, had apparently been in good health. He was stricken at 5:30 a.m. in the Virgin Isle Hotel. He was believed to have suffered a heart attack, but the cause of death was not immediately determined. Hearst and his wife came here two weeks ago on a vacation. She was with him when he was stricken. Mr.Hearst was a native of New York City. After studying at Oglethorpe University, he was given his first editorial assignment as assistant to the publisher of the Atlanta Georgian. He served as president of Harper's Bazaar-Cosmopolitan, Book Corp., general manager of Hearst radio operations,and assistant to the general manager of the International Magazine Corp. He was publisher of the New York Daily Mirror from 1932 to 1934, and president of the old New York Evening Journal from 1936 to 1937. Hearst had been assistant general manager of Hearst Newspapers since 1941. The Hearsts had four children.
His children are John Randolph Hearst II, and Deborah. Hearst was the third son of William Randolph Hearst. His oldest brother, George, is vice president and director of the Hearst Corp., San Francisco; and the next oldest, William Randolph Hearst Jr., of New York, is editor in chief of Hearst Newspapers, a director of Hearst Enterprises Inc., and vice president-director of the Hearst Corp.
His younger twin brothers are David W., and Randolph A., both residing. in Beverly Hills, Calif. David is publisher of the Los Angeles Herald and Express, vice president and director of Hearst Consolidated Publications Inc., and the Hearst Publishing Co.
Randolph is president of the Hearst Publishing Co., a vice-president director of Hearst Consolidated Publications, and director of the Hearst Foundation.

1,000 Attend Hearst Funeral Services

NEW YORK, NOV. 17—Funeral services attended by about 1,000 mourners were held today in St. Bartholomew's Church for John Randolph Hearst, one of five sons of late publisher William Randolph Hearst.
Hearst, 49, assistant general manager of Hearst newspapers, died of a heart attack Thursday in the Virgin Islands. THe service was conducted by the rector of the fashionable Park Avenue Church, Dr.
Terance J. Finlay. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, the Bronx.
