25th June 1864. . . . The little woman rode down to Mother's to see her cousin John Connally [SIC] who has just returned from the Army. he reports that Capt. Vontress was killed on the 17th inst. by lightning as well as the horse upon which he was riding while bearing a dispatch from his general officer. he was acting at the time as aid de campe. . . . from the Journal of James Madison Hall . . .
