US Congressman. He was elected as a Democrat to represent New York's 17th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1855 to 1861. Soon after his Congressional terms ended, he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Treasurer of the United States, a capacity he served from 1861 to 1875.
