James Taylor's family Bible states his parents are William and Mary Taylor. James and Ann Taylor were buried together on their farm in Grainger County, Tennessee. In 1912, a monument was erected for them in the family cemetery by the James Taylor Memorial Association. In 1941, the Taylor Cemetery was scheduled to be flooded by the TVA, so their remains and marker were moved to nearby Bethesda Cemetery in Hamblin County, Tennessee.
The estate of James Taylor was settled in Grainger County, Tennessee. The farm of James and Ann was left to their son, Hughes Owen Taylor, who lived on it until his death in 1837. The farm was passed on to Grant Taylor, a son of Hughes Owen & Elizabeth Taylor. The Taylor farm was owned by descendants for over 180 years.
James and Ann Taylor seem to have had a real affection for each other. James wrote to his faraway children of their mother's health and condition, In one letter, he said "I take great pleasure in waiting on her." In 1791, he wrote in a letter, "I wish to spend my days with your mother if it's the lord's will to spare her to me." In several letters, he commented that he had not spent the night away from Ann in four years.
Information based on the Taylor Family Bible and data provided by descendants, it is believed Mary's maiden name was Hughes, their youngest son was named Hughes Owen, the maiden names of his mother and grandmother.
