Obituary - The Deseret News, April 15, 2007
"The Greatest Generation" Martin Andrew Andersen passed away April 12, 2007. Born June 16, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Catherine Dyk-stra and Jens Andersen. He was reared in Salt Lake's east-side neighborhoods and attended South High. In 1939, he married Alma Ida Youngberg, his devoted life partner of 69 years.
Veteran of the Marine Corps that fought the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. After the war he learned the painting and decorating trade becoming a successful contactor (Andersen and Company) in 1963 until retiring in 1984, after which he worked with his sons at the trade until his 79th year. An avid gardener, his home and yard in Kearns was a showpiece in the neighborhood for 44 years. He and his wife relocated to Taylorsville in 2001, joined the Taylorsville Senior Citizens, where he enjoyed lunches and the companionship of others. A baseball player as a youth, he rarely missed a game on evening TV. Until six weeks ago, his determined, restless spirit led to daily trips on his scooter, cruising 45th South and Redwood Road to shop and socialize at local businesses. Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Special thanks go out to the dedicated doctors and staff at the VA hospital and Christus St. Joseph's for their care of dad this past month.
..... Preceded in death by his parents, and six siblings.
