East Dubuque duo die in plane crash
An early morning plane crash Nov. 26, near Platteville, Wis. claimed the lives of two Jo Daviess county men. Ronald Armstrong, 27, and David D. Reichers, 29, both of East Dubuque, were pronounced dead at the scene by Grant County, Wis. coroner Bill Letcher. According to Grant County Sheriff's Department officials, a report was received at 4am from a man who said he heard a plane running for about one minute followed by the sound of a crash. Several officers from the sheriff's department, Cuba City (Wis.) Police Department and Platteville Police Department were dispatched. However the search was hampered by fog and rain. About 4pm, a search plane spotted the crash two miles south of Platteville, near Pleasant Valley Road. Armstrong's body was found about 80 feet from the plane. Reicher's body was found with a portion of the plane. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials were called to the scene on Friday, Nov. 27 to investigate the cause of the crash. Grant County Sheriff's officials said Reicher's has a student pilot's license which enabled him to fly alone or with a licensed pilot, but not to carry passengers. Autopsies and tests were performed on both men Friday morning, Nov. 27, by both Grant County officials and FAA investigators. County results are expected back later this week. FAA tests were sent directly to Kansas City, Kan. Grant County officials did not know when the results from those tests would be received. Armstrong was a 1972 graduate of Galena High School and worked at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works in Dubuque, Iowa.
