U.S. Congressman. Moving to Iowa, in 1873, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and attended Breckenridge College. He also was treasurer of Worth County, (1887-93), organized the Northwood Banking Company, in 1890 and was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1894-98). In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth Congress and to the sixteen succeeding Congresses, serving until his death.
