Valentine Dinkel was born in Neu-Ulm, Bayern (Bavaria) Germany in 1857, the sixth of ten children of Gottlieb Dinkel and Katharina Elizabetha Neubronner. At the age of 14, he and a friend emigrated to the US aboard the SS Rhein, arriving in New York on July 8, 1871. He arrived in Putnam Township, Livingston County in 1876 and married Maria Lakin on November 28, 1878. Valentine and Maria had six children: John C, Bertha, Walter D, Albert, Eugene, and Otto Valentine. Family members still live in the little house in Pinckney, Michigan, where Valentine and Maria lived after they stopped farming and moved into town. He died of broncho pneumonia on March 29, 1923. in Pinckney, Livingston County, Michigan.

Valentine's parents were Gotlieb Friedrich Dinkel (1804-1869) of Neu Ulm and Catharina Elisabetha Neubronner (1828-1889) of Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
