Actor. He was a versatile character performer who appeared in numerous Hollywood films most notably as the German U-boat captain in Alfred Hitchcock's "Lifeboat" (1944). He made his big screen debut in the Austrian film "Sodom and Gomorrah" (1922) and went on to work steadily in over 100 films. His many credits include "This Land is Mine" (1943), "The Princess and the Pirate" (1948), "The Pirate" (1948), "The Inspector General" (1949), "People Will Talk" (1951), and "Come September" (1961). He also acted on the Broadway stage for many years and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, for his role in "Fanny" (1955). For television, he appeared on "This Is Show Business," "Studio One," "Playhouse 90" and "Batman." He also was the son of the famed opera singer Leo Slezak and his daughter Erika is an Emmy Award winning actress on the television series "One Life to Live."
