Services for Mr. Ralph L. Kirchen, 63, 2063 North Star Drive, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church, 4300 Asbury Road. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Asbury, Iowa, where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion Post 6, of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a Resurrection Catholic Church parish Christian wake service at 4:30 p.m. He was born on Dec. 8, 1933, in Dubuque, son of Ralph L. and Dorothy (Heller) Kirchen Sr. He died after a long and courageous battle with muscular dystrophy at 12:35 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit.
He married Alvara "Vi" E. Wiederholt on Aug. 22, 1961, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kieler, Wis. He grew up in Dubuque, and graduated from the former Loras Academy in 1951. He then attended and graduated from Carroll College, Helena, Mont., in 1956. He has been disabled with muscular dystrophy since 1974. Prior to being disabled he was an elementary and high school teacher in various locations for the Archdiocese of Dubuque. He also worked at the Telegraph Herald as a writer and librarian from 1967-74. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and was an Army veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. Surviving are his wife, Alvara "Vi" E. (Wiederholt) Kirchen; a son, Kevin R. (Sarah) Kirchen of Rock Island, Ill.; two daughters, Lisa C. (Mark) Krieg, of Dubuque, and Lynn K. (Randy) Tschiggfrie, of Rockwall, Texas; two grandchildren, Katelyn Tschiggfrie and Benjamin Krieg; his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Kirchen, of Dubuque; and a sister, Janet (Dick) McQuillen, of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his father. The family requests no flowers. A Ralph L. Kirchen Memorial Fund has been established by his family.
