Poet, Author. Known as "The Bronze Muse", she is considered to be the first black woman to make a living from writing. An educator and poet by trade, she was a stuanch and outspoken supporter of the abolitionist, temperance and early feminist and civil rights movements. Noted friends and contemporaries include Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She published books throughout her lifetime, including "Sketches of Southern Life" in 1872, the "Martyr of Alabama and Other Poems" in 1894, and her well-known novel "Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted" in 1892.
