Maria was born on the Isle of Jersey where her father and mother had moved in 1850 as her dad, Isaac, worked near Le Hague at the manor house there for Capt. Pipon as a gardener. The captain met a Canadian and married her and left the manor in charge of Isaac where Amos and Maria were raised for several years.. The family moved to St Helier's, Isle of Jersey, where her father was employed by Charles Tennyson, the brother of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Maria was a talented dress maker and was employed by the Tennyson family to make dresses. The family returned to England in 1874 when Maria was a young woman in her twenties.

She immigrated to the US after her only brother, Amos Ball's, wife, Selina Scoble Ball, died in 1909 in Toledo, Tama County, Iowa, where she lived with her brother and his family. She never married. Later, after her brother retired, the 2 of them moved to California where all 4 of his daughters lived and she lived there with is brother, Amos, until she died in 1930.
