John Sylvester Snyder, the second oldest son of John Hartranft Snyder and Minnie Rebecka (Strohecker) Snyder, was born at the Snyder family home on Main Street in Lavelle, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
He was a long-time Mason who worked professionally as a construction manager with McKinney Construction in Northumberland County and then Portland Cement in Allentown.
He married Catherine Rissmiller of Gordon in Schuylkill County. Together, they had two children, John Albert "Jack" Snyder, and David Cameron Snyder. Tragically, David's life was cut short when he was killed in an automobile accident.
Their son, Jack, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1977. His tours of duty took him to Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Texas, where he spent the remainder of his life. He now rests at the national military cemetery at Fort Sam Houston. Jack's son, J.D., who died while on active duty with the U.S. Air Force in Manila, was a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and is interred at the Academy's cemetery in Colorado.
