First woman elected to the state Senate of Ohio, she served from 1920 to 1933. She was an active Senator with the respect of her colleagues. Her activity in the legislature is published in many newspaper articles throughout Ohio during her service.
As a young woman in Vermont, she finished at Middlebury High School, following that with Normal School (teacher training) at Vermont College. In 1900, she was living in Massachusetts and working as a dressmaker, possibly just prior to entering the teaching profession. By 1903, she met and married Walter Gustavus Waitt, a Boston native who completed his education at Harvard University. Prior to 1910, the couple moved to Ohio and had a daughter, Doris (Dora) Ida. Walter's career involved battery production as plant manager at the National Carbon Company, then VP and production Manager of the Twin Dry Cell Battery Company of Cleveland. Maude was very active in the community of Cuyahoga County, promoting a successful plan for Civics classes, actively leading in the cause for women's suffrage, organizing war-time support for Liberty Bond and Red Cross drives, public speaking engagements, Republican Party activities, serving on City Council, and more. She was requested by the Citizens' Committee to run for state Senate in 1922 and won the seat. As Senator, she introduced five bills, all of which passed.
