Bessie Ullman, 98, of 1221 E. Fourth St., died March 1, 2011, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Ottumwa to Joseph and Ida Cantor Barmash. She married Charles Ullman June 19, 1938, in Ottumwa. He preceded her in death April 2, 1969.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1931, she helped her parents in their store in her younger years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for a cousin in New York, returning to Ottumwa in 1937 to marry her husband.
She was a member of B'Nal Jacob Synagogue and was instrumental in getting the synagogue on the National Historic Register. Bessie was a volunteer at Ottumwa Hospital before it was the Ottumwa Regional Health Center for more than 50 years. She was inducted into the Ottumwa Regional Health Center Hall of Fame in 2006 for her long service. She also volunteered at the YWCA and for the Girl Scouts of America. After the death of her husband, she became the director for the YWCA from 1971-78. She was selected as Boss of the Year in 1977. She worked as a precinct worker for the Democratic Party. She also attended several Elder Hostels around the country and was a member of the local chapter of the Soroptimist International of America.
During the late 1960s, she was simultaneously president of Democratic Women of Southern Iowa, Girl Scouts of Southern Iowa Council, local YWCA and local Hadassah. She was awarded the Ottumwa Area Fellowship of Churches Ecumenical Award in 1994. She was devoted to volunteering, community and family. She enjoyed playing bridge with the many friends who also volunteered in the community.
Surviving are two sons, Bernard(Ella)Ullman of Overland Park, Kan., and Stanley(Paula)Ullman of Lone Tree, Colo.; a daughter, Joyce(Herb)Hodes of Fairfield, Ohio; six grandchildren, Scott(Rochelle)Hodes of Rockville, Md., Lee(Susan)Ullman of Leawood, Kan., Michelle(Mike)Gips of Bethesda, Md., Chad(Julie)Ullman of Scottsdale, Ariz., Brad(Karen)Ullman of Mercer Island, Wash., and Danielle(Jason)Wynn of Englewood, Colo.; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Milo, Sam, Maurice and Albert Barmash; and a sister, Helen Leman.
Funeral services will be 11 am Thursday at Reece Funeral Home; Rabbi Allen Gonsher officiating. Burial will be in the Ottumwa Jewish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation-Bessie Ullman Endowment Fund, Ottumwa, Iowa or Hospice, Ottumwa, Iowa or to the charity of one's choice.
