Daughter of Charles and Rebecca Katherine Dannel [Daniel] La Turno, Caroline had to cross a log on her way to school each morning. Family tradition says her father immigrated from France with a brother who died on board the ship and was buried at sea. Charles may have entered via New Orleans and come up the Mississippi to Missouri. We have no information about her mother, who was known as Catherine.

Caroline had seven known siblings, four from a step-mother whose name is unknown. They were: John, Augustus, George and by her step-mother - Eliza [ m Murrill], Frank, Ed and Sam LaTurno, who drowned as a teen-ager.

On 28 Jun 1866 in Belleville, St. Claire Co. IL Caroline married William Thomas DARE. They had 10 children, three of whom did not reach adulthood. We have not found the graves of Lucibia, Johnny or Mattie who all died very young. Their other children were:

Caroline and Tom were farmers living most of their married life in Jefferson Co. Caroline lived four years of widowhood with her children in turn.
