We do not know when he came to IL. John farmed in Jefferson and Hamilton Co. of IL and perhaps in KY or TN earlier. He married at least three times and had 11 or more children.
On 5 Apr 1838 in Jefferson County IL he married Shuby (Shirly on the county register) Twitty d1846/7. They had daughters Parsida (Perida) Darnell (Perry) and Lucinda (Angelina?) Darnell (Hollaway). Shuby already had three daughters born in Tennessee who were under the guardianship of her mother, Sarah Mackey Twitty Bodine. Lucinda's obituary says a sister, Elizabeth Lampley, survived her, along with Parsida. Not known whose daughter she is. The ages of John's other children say he married before Shuby, but that wife has not been found. They may have married in Kentucky or Tennessee.
On 2 Oct 1847 John is listed in the Illinois State Marriage Index as marrying widow Mary Ann Manees d1888. Mary Ann also had children, some of whom lived with them. The 1850 Illinois Census lists John 41 NC, Mary A. 40 KY,and children John F.17?, James M. 16 (d1872), William 19?, Matthew 14, Denny (?or Henry) 11, Angelina 6. The handwriting is poor. The eleven year old's name is unclear and the child Angelina never appears again while Lucinda (same age) grows up to marry John Carrol Hollaway.
A 1990's Jefferson County Genealogical Society bulletin contains an article "The Dareville Store." That article lists three wives for John F. Darnell including Shuby, Mary Manees, and Eliza Ann Coffman, who had also married John Loman. She appears as Eliza Loman, wife of John W. Loman, in the Elk Prairie Township part of the 1860 US Census. She is listed as marrying John F. Darnall, in 1856 in the Illinois State Marriage Index.
The notice of probate for John Darnall's will (1875) lists his widow as Mary A. Darnall. Heirs include Eliza Ann Lampley, Martha C. Parrish, Lucinda Halloway, Perida Perry, C.T. Pace (guardian for Luella and Martha L. Darnall), and grandchildren James and John, sons of John Darnall, Jr. The tombstone says John DARNALL 79 yr, 9 mo. 28 da.
It is also possible that Eliza Coffman Loman married John Darnell, the son. An Eliza Ann Darnall is listed in the Illinois Marriage Index as marrying Jacob Lampley on 25 May 1846 in Franklin Co.
The 1850 census for Franklin Co. shows Parsida Darnell, 8 living with James and Martha Lusk.
Clarification and corrections are welcome.
