Kansas Governor, U.S. Senator. Moving to Kansas in 1859, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and served as a Captain in the 4th Kansas Infantry, Union Army (1861 to 1864), during the Civil War. After the war, he was a member of the Kansas State House of Representatives (1865 to 1866) and a member of the Kansas State Senate (1867 to 1868). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican the 5th Governor of Kansas, serving until 1873. He was then elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Alexander Caldwell, serving (1874 to 1877). After leaving the Senate, he was a U.S. Government Surveyor in New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and Oklahoma.
