U.S. Senator. He attended Jamestown and Randolph Academies and during the Civil War, served as a Major in the 154th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced to practice law in Sherman, New York. Moving to Kansas, in 1869, held various local offices, was a member of the Kansas State Senate, (1881-85) and judge of the fourth judicial district of Kansas, (1885-97). In 1906, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Joseph R. Burton, serving until 1907. An unsuccessful candidate for election, he served as a Justice of Kansas State Supreme Court, (1907-1915) and then lived in retirement until his death at age 72.
