At the Elizabeth House health care community. He was a lifelong resident of Henderson County. He was the owner and operator of Blackwell's Used Furniture and member of the Mountain View Baptist Church, where he had served as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps, World War II veteran and had participated in the D-Day invasion at Utah Beach.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Allene Elizabeth Gilliam Blackwell in 1975, and Gladys Metcalf Blackwell in 1993, whom he married in 1977. also preceding him in death were his parents, R.M. Blackwell & Nellie Kate Sudduth; his brothers, Ray, Curtis, L.B., Johnny, Luther, & Arvil, and sister, Jessie Blackwell Sherman.

Survivors include his children, Larry (Edith) Metcalf, Grace Anne Blackwell (Jerry) Young, Donald Seagle (Phoebe) Blackwell, & Paul Lowell (Rhonda) Blackwell; his brother, Rev. Dan (Marie) Blackwell; sister-in-law, Grace Case; brother-in-law, Glen (Betty) Gilliam, Florence, SC; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

Interment followed funeral services conducted at the Mountain View Baptist church on Wednesday, January 21, 2009; Rev. Mike McMillion presided. Full military graveside services were performed by the Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post No. 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 5206, and Chapter 14 of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). The Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors in Hendersonville assisted the family with the arrangements.
