Barnum Bliss, one of the best known men in the town of Oakfleld, died suddenly this morning. Mr. Bliss was prostrated by an attack of grip in the fall, but rallied from it except that he regained his strength slowly, and had since been in a fair state of health considering his advanced age. At about 8 o'clock this morning he suffered from cerebral hemorrhage, dying at 8 o'clock. Mr. Bliss was a son of Samuel Bliss, a Revolutionary soldier, and was born in Gllboa, Schoharie county, this State on March 20,1805, being at the time of his death nearly 88 years old. Soon after the death of his father in 1837 he came to Oakfleld and for more than half a century had lived continuously in that town, being engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a prominent citizen in Oakfield, known throughout the county by a large number of friends, and held in high esteem by all. For his second wife Mr. Bliss married Eveline Day, daughter of William Day, who survives him. He also leaves two sons, William Bliss of California and Anson T. Bliss of Batavia, and two daughters, Hannah L. Conklin of Woodstock, Illinois, and Julia A. Underhill of Elba.

For more than 64 years Mr. Bliss was a Free Mason and it is said of him that he had been longer a member of the fraternity than any man in the State. He was made a Mason in the lodge at Gilboa on October 21, 1828. Upon his arrival in Genesee county he affiliated with the lodge in Batavia and in 1864 became a member of Western Star Chapter, R.A.M., and later receiving the orders conferred by Batavia Commandery Knights Templar. The funeral is to be held from the house next Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock and from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock, the burial to be under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity of Batavia.
