Born on a rented pioneer farm near Fairbury, the eldest of seven children of Gustav and Augusta Fritz Witt, Hannah was a talented homemaker, gardener and gifted healer, serving as nurse and midwife to many residents of Sibley area.

She married Johann Gerken on Feb. 28, 1907 at her father's home in Sibley. Her sister, Ida Witt [Franks]& Albert Brucker witnessed the ceremony conducted by B. H. Spaulding.

The couple farmed for Sibley Estate until his death in 1937. They had 3 children.

Hanna was a dedicated member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Sibley, IL where she served as custodian and communion steward the latter years of her life. Hanna paid for a new pulpit for St. John's church in 1937, in memory of her husband. She was a beloved member of the community.
