JONESPORT - Philmore H. Smith Sr., 90, known as "GAR-GAR," passed away at his residence. He was born the son of Hoyt P. and Velora J. (Lamson) Smith. Philmore grew up on lighthouses, where his father was the keeper. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. He belonged to St. Aspinquid Lodge #198; Washington Chapter #16 Royal Arch Masons; Scottish Rite Bodies; Kora Temple Shrine; Rumery Chapter #46 Order of the Eastern Star. In 1967 he worked at Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute retiring in 1985 and moving back to Jonesport. Philmore was an avid deer and duck hunter and carved sea birds and songbirds. Philmore is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Florence A. (Manchester); one daughter, Sharon and her husband, Charles; one son, Philmore Jr. and his wife, Janice; two sisters, Ruth and Mary and 2 brothers Coleman and Charles. He is also survived by six granddaughters; two grandsons and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Philmore was predeceased by his parents and brother, Hoyt Smith. Funeral services with Masonic services and military honors was held at Community of Christ Church, Jonesport, with Pastor Sharon Church officiating.
