Michigan Governor. After studying law attending Transylvania University, he was appointed by President Andrew Jackson Secretary of the Michigan Territory and superintendent of Indian affairs, serving 1830-35. He also served frequently as the Michigan acting governor and when Michigan was admitted as a state to the Union, he was elected as a Democrat the first Michigan Governor, serving 1837-40. During his two terms, a state wide educational system was advocated for, land was secured for the future site of the University of Michigan and the state’s first geologist was named. Also, internal improvements were halted when the state’s economic conditions deteriorated due to the Panic of 1837. After leaving office, he retired from politics and practiced law in New York City, until his death from pneumonia. He was originally was buried in the New York Marble Cemetery New York and his remains were later transported to Michigan, being interred at Capital Park with a bronze statue of Mason on a granite pedestal erected over the grave.
