He is best remembered for his television roles as the lawyer Lawrence Preston on "The Defenders" (1961 to 1965) and as neurosurgeon David Craig on "The Bold Ones: The New Doctors" that aired from 1969 to 1973, and his role in the movie "12 Angry Men" (1957) as the unflappable, conscientious "Juror #4." Born Everett Eugene Grunz, he attended both Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis/Saint Paul. During his life he chose not to reveal what "E.G." stood for, telling most people it stood for "Everybody's Guess." Over the course of his acting career he appeared in over 35 movies, including "The Caine Mutiny" (1954), "The Silver Chalice" (1954), "12 Angry Men" (1957), "Town Without Pity" (1961), "The Bridge at Remagen" (1969), "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970), "The Pursuit of Happiness" (1971), "Billy Jack Goes to Washington" (1977), "Superman II" (1980), "The Phoenix" (1982), "Creepshow" (1982), "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation" (1989", "Consenting Adults" (1992), "Nixon" (1995), and "Absolute Power" (1997), as well as the television miniseries "Kennedy" (1983), "War and Remembrance" (1988 to 1989), and "The Tommyknockers" (1993). In addition to his television and movie roles, he also had a distinguished Broadway career, appearing in the original New York productions of "The Skin of Our Teeth" and "The Iceman Cometh." From January 1974 until February 1982, he was the original host of the popular nightly radio drama, "The CBS Radio Mystery Theater." He died of lung cancer at the age of 84.
