"Annie Rubick grew up in Homewood, KS. She married Stephen Baldwin. Two of their seven children died in infancy. After Stephen died in 1946, Annie continued to live in the family home in New Salem, KS. She was a fiercely independent woman and even when her health was failing, she insisted on doing things for herself. In Annie's old age, New Salem was almost deserted. Only a few elderly people remained and all businesses had closed. She rode a commuter train to Winfield, KS to do her shopping and to go to the bank. As a young woman she had been quite tall, 5'9". In her old age, she was very bent and could not stand erect."
