Fern Van Steenwyk, 102, died on Monday, February 21, 2011, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, SD. Fern Hickok was born on September 17, 1908, in Lake Crystal, MN, the daughter of Oren and Madge (Rooker) Hickok. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Vern and two sisters Myrtle and Grace, and one great-great grandson. As a small child , her family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where she attended elementary and high school. She was united in marriage to Myrl Van Steenwyk on April 23, 1927. They had three children. In 1940, they moved to a farm north of Flandreau, SD. In 1942, they moved to a farm north of Salem, SD, where they lived until 1955. They then moved to San Diego, CA where they managed hotel apartments. After their retirement they moved back to Salem. After Myrl's death in 1997, she moved to Brookings to be near her daughters. Fern was a member of the Sun Prairie Baptist Church in rural Salem, SD. She taught Sunday school for many years and was instrumental in starting the Home Builders Class. She was also president of the Women's Work. Fern is survived by her daughters Lenora McMillan of Sioux Falls, SD, Elsie (Stanley) Rymerson of Brookings, SD; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, many great-great grandchildren and two great-great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Friday, February 25, 2011, at the Sun Prairie Baptist Church in rural Salem, SD. Visitation will be from 1:00pm until time of service at the church.
