He married Amelia A. Roepke in about 1876 and they had seven surviving children: Otto, Mina & Elizabeth (twins), Charles William, Henry John, Edward Ludwick, and Emil Henry. Carl was a founding member of St. Paul's German Presbyterian Church in Elmont, where he and Amelia are buried.
