Professional Football Player, Actor. Born in Los Angeles, he was an athlete and a football star in his youth. His mother was full-blooded Blackfoot, and he played often, Indians in John Ford's films. In 1946 he was one of the first blacks to play in the National Football League. With a strong presence in the screen, he is best remembered for his play in John Ford's "Sergeant Rutledge" (1960). Also, he played in "Spartacus" (1960) and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962), again, with John Ford. He was married almost forty years to a Hawaiian princess, Luukialuana Kalaeloa. His last film, "The Quick and the Dead" with Gene Hackman and Sharon Stone, released after his death.
