PURPLE HEART

1st Lt. Deck was piloting a troop carrying helicopter in September of 1965 and was shot down by hostile enemy fire in Vietnam. He was badly injured and was eventually flown back to the United States where he remained in constant treatment at both Walter Reed Army Hospital & The Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington D.C. for a severe brain injury with complications until his death.

Graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1958 and received a degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1963.

He worked as a chemical engineer for W. R. Grace & Co. in Erwin, Tennessee and was called to active duty with the Army Reserves in 1964. He trained as a helicopter pilot at Ft. Rucker, Alabama and went to Vietnam in the summer of 1965.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Manus Deck whom he married in December 1964. His parents, Mr. & Mrs. Patrick A. Deck and two sisters Ellen Nesheim & Margie Deck.
