Winford Mitchell Cox, 80, went to be with Jesus Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson,SC.
Born in Greer,SC.He was the son of the late Alfred Broadus and Willie Mae Walls Cox. He worked for many years with the Abney Corporation and retired from Orr-Lyons in Textiles. He was a Charter Member of McDuffie Street Church of God and River of Life. He was a self-taught pianist, gospel songwriter, soloist, and enjoyed singing in church and nursing homes in previous years.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Betty June Walker Cox; daughters, Diane Patterson and husband, Daryl, Linda Cox Pena, and a son, Michael Cox and wife, Myra, all of Anderson; three brothers, Rev. Larry Cox (Pat), Lindell Cox (Joyce), and Gerald Cox (Joyce), all of Anderson; and one sister, Sarah Timms of Honea Path. He leaves behind his greatest joy in life, "His Angels", nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He also is survived by stepbrothers, Elmer, Robert, Roscoe, and Eugene Powell of Iva, a stepsister, Margaret Craft of Toccoa, GA; and family pet, Jojo. Extended family survivors are Ruby Hunter of Myrtle Beach, Vera Simpson, Darin and Brooke Stasney, and Debra McKinney.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Bertha Lee Powell Cox, and two stepsisters, Jenny Whitman and Annie Ruth Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, conducted by Revs. Larry Cox, Stacey Cox, Kevin Jones, and Dr. Stoney Abercrombie. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary, 3205 North Highway 81, Anderson. The family is at the home of a daughter, Linda Pena, 172 Newington Circle, Kings Grant, Anderson.
Flowers are optional; memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
