The youngest child to come over to the U.S. with Balser and Catherine, Frederick, was born on September 8, 1839 in Mauchenheim, Bayern, Germany. His baptism information lists his mother's name as "Catherine Gulcher." Frederick would enlist in the Indiana Infantry in the Civil War and die in 1862. Frederick's younger brother, John, would also enlist in the same regiment. He died a few weeks before Frederick in early August 1862.
According to the obituaries of the children of Balser and Catherine, it would appear that the family came from Ohio to St. Joseph, Indiana between 1845 and 1847. Catherine died one month after arriving in St. Joseph. I believe that the youngest son, Balser, was sent to live a relative when he was young as he is not listed on the 1850 census with Balser, Sr and the rest of the children.
Obituary from The Bremen Enquirer, Oct. 2, 1896 -
Balser Manges, an old settler, of Madison township, St. Joseph County, died at the residence of his son, Philip Manges, five miles north of Bremen on last Friday night. Mr. Manges had reached the advanced age of 94 years. He was sick but a few days prior to his death. He was probably the oldest man in St. Joseph county. The funeral services were held at Madison church at 10 o'clock Sunday, Rev. H. W. Krichbaum, of South Bend, officiating.
