~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Almon D. Champney, Ruth's husband, was born in March 1814 in New York. He came to Jamestown, California, in 1849 or 1850 and was a merchant. He returned to New York where he married Ruth E. Dodge on August 30, 1848, and returned to California with her and their eldest child in 1853 or 1854. In 1860, the family was living in Columbia, and Almon was a miner in a quartz mine.
The family lived in Columbia in 1870, where Almon was a farmer.
The Champneys had several children, the first being born in New York and the others in California. Their daughters were Jessie Martha, their eldest child, who was born August 15, 1853 in New York, and Mary Elizabeth who was born May 5, 1856. Their sons were Fred A. who was born September 1854, George H. who was born December 1858, and Charles Loren, who was born January 13, 1861.
On March 28, 1890, Ruth passed away near Springfield.
By 1900, Almon and all five of the children lived together on Market Street in Oakland, California. Almon was 86 years old. None of his children had married, all of his sons were carpenters, and both his daughters were not employed.
Almon passed away in Alameda County, California, February 4, 1907, at the age of 92. George, Martha and Mary were still living in Oakland together as single adults in 1910. George was the only one employed at that time, and he was still doing carpentry work. Fred and Charles were still single and living together in the Stanislaus Forest Reserve, Mariposa County, California, where they were farmers.
In 1920, the Champney siblings' homes and lifestyles were about the same as in 1910. George's occupation was listed as a building contractor, Fred's occupation was an orchard farmer, and Charles' occupation was a gold miner.
In 1930, all the siblings were still single and living together except Fred. Fred remained in Mariposa where he was a house builder at age 75. Charles had moved in with George and his sisters in Oakland. Charles and George were also house builders, and their sister, Martha, was a dressmaker.
Charles passed away January 12, 1943.
Martha passed away March 7, 1942.
Mary passed away March 25, 1943.
It is likely Fred passed away between 1930 and 1940.
Men who were the head of the family and living in Rodman,Jefferson County, New York, in 1820, about the time Ruth was an infant, per the 1820 United States census, were as follows:
