Sid L. Bonnel, 76, of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away Friday, March 14, 2003, in Tucson, Arizona.

Mr. Bonnel was born June 16, 1926, in Effingham, Kansas to John R. and Anna M. (Lassen) Bonnel.

Sid graduated from Effingham High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Fort Leavenworth Communications Command as a Management Specialist. He served on the Commanding General's staff as Director of Communications and Electronics and was also commander of the U.S. Army Communications Command Detachment of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 6 and the Eagles Aerie No. 55. He was also a member of Nortonville Christian Church.

He married Deloris A. Clem on April 12, 1946; they are divorced.

Sid enjoyed traveling and was a dedicated snow bird for 20 years, traveling to Holtville, California.

Survivors include his children, Dorothy A. Hobbs of Winchester, Kansas, Cinda M. Scherer of Topeka, Kansas, Janet Neal of Valley Falls, Rick Bonnel of Winchester, Kansas, Joe Bonnel of Nortonville, Kansas, and John Bonnel of Winchester; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and three brothers.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2003 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, Kansas with the Rev. LeRoy Riley officiating. Burial will be at Effingham Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the funeral home. Contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
