Walter Thompson Cate apparently deserted wife Rosa in about 1900. Son Frank stayed on to help support family. Walter was in Civil War, spent time in Mississippi, and returned to Quincy after becoming ill. He had dropsy per Louis Gilbert. He came to daughter's, Grace Gilbert, house to die. Louis was about 6 years old when Walter died at Grace's house. Only Louis and Grace attended Walter's burial. Louis remembers that it was snowing when Walter was buried.
