Tallahassee, Fla. - Martha Kay Miller Smart Baird, 85, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully from complications of Alzheimer's Disease on Wednesday, February 16, 2011.

Martha was born on February 24, 1925 in Canton, North Carolina. She attended Canton High School, graduating in May, 1943. On July 5th, 1947, she married Clarence Billy "Bill" Smart. Bill and Martha lived in Asheville, Marion and finally Rutherfordton during their 42 year marriage and raised one son, Thomas William Smart. Bill passed away March 2nd of 1990. In January, 2000, Martha married Cud T. Baird III.

Martha's professional career included serving as the secretary for the District Superintendant of the United Methodist Church as well as a bookkeeper for multiple area businesses before beginning her career as a nursing home administrator. She retired as the Administrator of Aston Park Health Care Center in Asheville. Upon her retirement, she became an avid genealogy enthusiast and enjoyed traveling to multiple states researching her family history.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Smart; father and mother, Fred J. and Ora Lee Miller; and brother, Fred J. Miller Jr. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William "T.W." and Benae Smart, her grandchildren, Ben, Kelly and Ryan Todd, Robbie and Megan Peterson, Caty Smart and one great-grandchild, Colton Todd.

Graveside service will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 3:30 at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville. Pallbearers will be Ben Todd, Ryan Todd, Robbie Peterson, David Miller, Garner Hallman and Ray Simmons.

On Martha's behalf, the family would like to thank Garner and Mary Hallman as well as Ray and Dimps Simmons for their special friendship throughout the many years. Martha requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Big Bend Hospice or the Alzheimer's Project both in Tallahassee, Fla. Arrangements have been entrusted to the caring staff of Garrett Funerals and Cremations, Waynesville.
