Ellen was the second of four children born to Thomas Ireland, b. Mar. 10, 1812 in Washington, PA. and d. in Mankato, Blue Earth, MN. &
Sophia Walters, b. in in NC and d. Aug. 20, 1862 at Lake Shetek, MN.
Sophia was his second wife. (Thomas was married previously to Sarah Harrison). 39 yr. old Thomas Ireland and Sophia Walters married Nov. 03, 1851 in New Bedford, Bureau, IL.

*Note: Sophia Walters Ireland was slain in an Indian attack along with five other adults and nine children at Lake Shetek, Murray Co., MN. Sally's husband, Tommy Ireland, was badly wounded and left for dead by the Indians. Their daughters, Sarah Jane, age 5 and Julie, age 3 were shot and killed. Ellen Nellie and Rose were taken captive, and sometime later, ponies were traded with the Indians for their release.
Thomas Ireland: Came to the lake in 1861, with his wife and four children. He was wounded at Slaughter Slough and left for dead by the Indians, but he was able to escape. He reached New Ulm, after walking 75 miles, and going 5 days without food. Two of his daughters were taken captive by Chief Redwood, but were released at Pierre. His wife and other two daughters were killed after they surrendered at Slaughter Slough.

On Jan. 09, 1867, 54 yr. old widow, Thomas Ireland married a third time, to Sally Smith, in Murray County, MN.
When Sally died in 1885, Thomas married a fourth time, to Sarah Underwood.

In the May 1, 1875 Minnesota, Territorial and State Census, 63 yr. old Thomas, b. in PA. was shown as living in Mankato, Blue Earth, MN. with his
56 yr. old (third) wife, Sally, b. in NY,
21 yr. old daughter Rose, b. in IL. and
20 yr. old daughter, Ellen, b. in IL.
Thomas' parents were b. in Ireland.

In the 1880 U.S. census, 24 yr. old 'Ella' Ireland, b. abt.
1856 in IL., was living in Mankato, Blue Earth, MN. with her
68 yr. old father, Thomas Ireland, a farmer, b. in PA.
62 yr. old stepmother, Salley Ireland, b. in NY.
Thomas' father was b. in Ireland and his mother in Prussia.

Ellen Nellie Ireland married Albert C. Hotaling.
