Tom Rixon was best known as the Uralla Swimming Pool Manager from 1969 until 1987. He opened a small shop in Uralla that sold the best burgers in Nsw.
He lived at 'Carinya' Kentucky South with his Wife and three sons. His first child Susan Maree Rixon died at nine weeks old in 1957.
At fifteen he left school and joined the Railway which was a very prestigious job back then.He was a good cyclist and was pulled over for 'speeding' on his bike.'This was his only brush with the law.He didnt drink or smoke.
In the winter months he sold fruit, especially Apples, door to door in Tamworth Manilla and Districts. He made many friends of his customers. He was happy working on the farm with his Newtown "Jets" beanie. He re built the house, did his own mechanical work on his white toyota van.Although my dad left school when he was far too young it didnt hold him back. He joined the lions club in Uralla and we spent many an hour working on stalls and charity events for the lions club. not only was Dad president several times but he was district governor as well. there are a lot of trees planted and many poor people who got their eyesight back as a result of the charity work that lions club did.He made lifelong friends there and was mourned by them up to this day.
He was a very style conscious and neat man.He dressed up even to go to the local shop. You would have to see his beautiful handwriting to appreciate its excellence.
He was an active member of the Uralla Lions club and became Zone chairman. He loved photography and took many super 8 film and on his beloved video camera. He always wore a white singlet under his clothes. He presented a printed singlet "handed down from father to son" to his favourite son,John for his 21st birthday.
He taught many of the children of Uralla to swim and spent too much time in the Sun.I have a video of him frollicking in the surf at Caloundra with a body board. His dream was to move to Caloundra and start a new life in the sun.He joked about being "A bronzed God" on the beach. We always went to Queensland for holidays. If only.....
He was loved by animals. He saved many animals and birds in his life. His little dog called "Cleo" protected his van when he bought his apples. She missed him so much when he was gone.Cats and Kangaroos always responded to him even a big bear at the zoo sat up close while Tom flicked peanuts into its giant maw.
He contacted Melanoma but his tests were mistakenly mis- diagnosed. He had the disease for years before it spread to his brain. He fought so bravely to stay alive, even taking up meditation. He passed away in February 1989.He was well loved and missed by his dozens of friends, customers and family.
